Technology: A Secure Career Field in an Uncertain Job Market /technology-a-secure-career-field-in-an-uncertain-job-market/ Fri, 22 May 2020 15:09:59 +0000 /?p=39795 If you read the news, it’s easy to become discouraged about the job market. In many industries, particularly those related to hospitality and tourism, work is difficult to come by. Yet there is hope. Michael Sabal, assistant professor of computer science & information systems at 天涯海角社区, shares that many industries continue to move forward, and they all depend on technology.听听
, the demand for technology workers continues to climb, particularly with skills in database development. As the report noted, job postings in the cybersecurity industry increased by 20 percent between February and March 2020, when COVID-19 began to affect our daily lives.
It is more important than ever to study technology at a school that will give you training for the jobs that are hiring. Here are just a few of the industries that you鈥檒l be prepared for:

  1. Cybersecurity helps all kinds of companies and organizations keep their codes and systems secure. Courses in web applications, data structures, cybersecurity testing and defense, and software engineering will prepare you for jobs in Software QA, a key part of many organizations’ security strategies.
  2. Data Engineering, particularly in health care, is one of the most in-demand jobs right now, Cairn students in the database design course recently completed an analysis of storm data from the U.S. weather service, NOAA, to determine what types of events had the greatest impact on human life and had the greatest economic impact.
  3. Systems Administration and Engineering is yet another career path that is adding many jobs in our local area and around the country. Information systems majors regularly build their skills in this field by completing project proposals for a variety of use cases, including identity management and cloud infrastructure. Hands-on projects of installing and configuring common server applications build on theory and provide the practical experience employers are looking for.

We recognize where the jobs are and the skills employers are looking for. At Cairn, you won鈥檛 just learn about these fields. We integrate skill building into all of our computer science and information systems courses, so you鈥檒l graduate with real hands-on experience. Some of our current students have even accepted consulting contracts for work using the skills they gained in class!

Christian College Tech Majors are Being Actively Recruited for Jobs. Here’s Why. /christian-college-tech-majors-are-being-actively-recruited-for-jobs-heres-why/ Fri, 22 May 2020 13:34:34 +0000 /?p=39788 Michael Sabal, faculty member for technology majors at 天涯海角社区, shares the skills that you should be sharpening (and that future employers are looking for!) if you鈥檙e pursuing a career in technology.听
I received a phone call from a local cybersecurity company last year looking specifically for graduates from Christian universities. When I asked why they were targeting our demographic for recruitment, they cited higher levels of professionalism and integrity than is typically found in graduates from secular institutions.听听
That may surprise you. When students are preparing for a college education in technology, their main concern is whether that degree will help them land a job. While it鈥檚 true that a computer science degree from M.I.T. carries more weight in industry than a similar degree from other institutions, many companies are looking for more than just academic credentials.
Interviews for high profile technology companies show that they are looking for individuals who can balance their interest in technology with these softer skills:
Integrity: A number of agencies have been working together over the past few years to offer research grants to universities to figure out how to incorporate higher standards of ethics into technology education. But at a Christian university, that emphasis of ethics and integrity comes standard. Bible and theology courses will help you grow in your faith, and your tech courses will also help you integrate your faith into your work. In these courses, you will regularly discuss the importance of giving due credit, how God gives you peace when facing difficult tasks, having a servant鈥檚 heart when assisting others, and what it means to approach every job with a desire for excellence.
Creativity: We recognize God is a creator, and He has created us in His likeness. The world often refers to technology as science, and in many ways it is. But designing programs, systems, and interfaces is as much of a craft and an art, having more in common with music and literature than with physics. Many of the highlights of computing technology history, such as punched cards, got their start in the textile industry. Even today, wearable technology (like an Apple watch) integrates form with function. At Cairn, many of our courses use game development to help you focus your learning in creative ways.
Human Relations: God did not create us for isolation; we were designed for fellowship.听 Learning, product development, and business all improve when significant social interaction is included. While most of your education will require individual work, technology courses at Cairn emphasize the importance of working collectively. Many of the courses include a heavy emphasis on completing projects that are shown to peers for feedback. While professionalism is part of many curricula, our biblical background helps us to respect every person as part of God鈥檚 creation, also made in His likeness.
Recruiters for tech companies are actively looking for Christian college graduates. The question is, will you be one of them? At Cairn, students interested in technology can major in computer science, cybersecurity, information systems. In any one of these majors, students can also enroll in a dual-level program to earn both a bachelor鈥檚 and an MBA in just five years. Download the eBook below or apply today to get started.
