Is a Master鈥檚 in Education Worth It? What to Know in 2025 /is-a-masters-in-education-worth-it-what-to-know-in-2025/ Wed, 07 May 2025 15:15:08 +0000 /?p=95437

If you鈥檙e an educator鈥攐r working your way to becoming one鈥攜ou may be asking yourself a big question: Is earning a master鈥檚 in education worth it these days?

Given the current trends, (some of which you may be noticing, others you may not feel the impact of) we think the answer is more compelling than ever. Let鈥檚 break down what makes a master鈥檚 in education worth it.

1. Career Advancement Opportunities

One of the biggest reasons educators pursue an MSEd, as you probably would guess, is to grow their careers. If you earn a master鈥檚 degree, you automatically:

  • Qualify for leadership roles (e.g. principal, curriculum coordinator, instructional coach)
  • Access higher salary tiers in public and private schools
  • Stand out in a competitive job market

Of course, it wouldn’t be a current analysis without some current trends and data. General data indicates that higher educational attainment correlates with increased earnings. For example, in 2023, the median weekly earnings for individuals with a master’s degree were $1,737, compared to $1,493 for those with a bachelor’s degree鈥攁 difference of $244 per week. This amounts to an annual difference of approximately $12,688 That’s a big number!

2. Develop Specialized Skills That Make a Difference

Is a master鈥檚 in education worth it if you don鈥檛 obtain new skills and knowledge that help you stand apart? Of course not! Quality graduate-level education programs are the ones that give you the chance to focus on areas that matter most in today鈥檚 classrooms. This can be accomplished through the kind of education master’s you pursue and through certificate or other add-ons that are becoming more and more available and more tailored to the kind of educational skills you want to enhance.

At Cairn, certificates include:

  • Graduate Certificate in Autism
  • Graduate Certificate in Instructional Technology

These specializations allow you to support diverse learners and lead with confidence. Especially now that more and more additional certificates, certifications, and endorsements are available, you can tailor the exact right path for your career!

3. Flexibility for Working Educators

Not only does a master鈥檚 in education help you in the long-term, many MSEd programs are tailored just for you if you are considering that step of education now! We know that many of our students are already balancing a full teaching schedule, family responsibilities, and community involvement.

That鈥檚 why Cairn offers fully online graduate education programs and online certificates that fit your lifestyle. We know that in this day and age accessible education is important to those pursuing a graduate degree. We hear you! You can complete your coursework while still teaching full time鈥攚ithout sacrificing quality or connection.

4. Faith Integration That Addresses Today's Issues in Education

What sets Cairn鈥檚 MSEd program apart is our commitment to biblical integration. We believe that how you teach is deeply connected to what you believe. In whatever type of school you end up teaching in鈥攑ublic, private, and everything in between鈥攜our ultimate calling is to live, teach, and lead as a Christian.听

A MS Ed from Cairn equips you to navigate today’s arising complexities. You will learn to teach with compassion, stand firm on your beliefs, and train up the next generation with integrity.

5. Real Impact in Real Classrooms

Earning your MSEd isn鈥檛 just about theory鈥攊t鈥檚 about transforming practice. Our students report increased confidence, deeper student engagement, and stronger leadership capacity after just a few courses.

Take it from a recently graduated student whose insight lends itself to the meaningful and transformative nature of a quality education degree:

鈥淔rom real-world classroom experiences鈥攕tarting your first semester of freshman year鈥攖o the professors who pour so much of themselves into you spiritually, socially, and academically, Cairn鈥檚 School of Education offers so much to future educators.鈥

Is a Master鈥檚 in Education Worth It?

Only If You鈥檙e Ready to Grow

If you’re passionate about education, leadership, and lasting change, a MSEd is more than a credential鈥攊t鈥檚 an investment in your calling. And with flexible, faith-integrated programs like those at 天涯海角社区, it鈥檚 more accessible than ever.

Whether you’re looking to advance your teaching skills, open new career doors, or step into leadership, a master鈥檚 of education can be a powerful next step. But like any graduate degree, it鈥檚 important to consider your goals, the return on investment, and the type of program that fits your life.

At 天涯海角社区, we鈥檝e helped hundreds of educators grow professionally and personally through our master鈥檚 in education and specialized certificate programs鈥攇rounded in academic excellence and a biblical worldview.

天涯海角社区 Hosts the 2025 Empowering Educators Seminar /cairn-university-hosts-the-2025-empowering-educators-seminar/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 12:19:07 +0000 /?p=95400 天涯海角社区 hosted its annual Empowering Educators Seminar on Thursday, March 27, 2025. 135 educators attended the seminar, eager to hear about this year鈥檚 topic and to reunite and fellowship with those who share the same calling.

The theme for this year was 鈥淚ncluding All Learners in Christian Schools.鈥 Keynote speaker spoke about inclusive education techniques. Her background as the CEO of All Belong, a center for inclusive education allowed her to address and provide solutions for the issues many attendees could identify.

Christian schools often struggle to have the necessary resources to support learners of all styles. Tubergen addressed these struggles and encouraged educators to start where they are with the students they have. She spoke about tapping into the strengths of struggling students instead of exclusively focusing on their areas of struggle. Tubergen also encouraged educators to think about how they could practically apply her points to their schools through a three step process focused on seeing, thinking, and doing. In both sessions, Tubergen emphasized the necessity to care for students and families through inclusion as a partnership. Her final encouragement to educators was to 鈥渢oil in the gap.鈥

In addition to the main sessions, seminar attendees had the opportunity to choose from a variety of breakout sessions. Topics for these sessions included, 鈥淓ngaging English Learners in the K鈥12 Classroom,鈥 鈥淯niversal Design for Learning,鈥 鈥淯nderstanding Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics, Strategies, and Support,鈥 and more. Each breakout session offered educators a chance to engage more deeply with a specific topic under the theme.听听

天涯海角社区 was pleased to encourage and support educators this year and looks forward to next year’s Empowering Educators Seminar.

What鈥檚 the Difference Between an EdD and a PhD? /whats-the-difference-between-an-edd-and-a-phd/ Mon, 03 Mar 2025 18:49:30 +0000 /?p=94653

While the difference between an EdD and a PhD may seem obvious at an initial glance at the letters, the distinctions extend beyond their abbreviations. In this blog, we鈥檒l explore the key distinctions between these two degrees, including program structure, career opportunities, and personal motivations for pursuing each path. If you鈥檙e unsure which degree aligns with your goals, use this guide to compare both and determine the best fit for you.

Table of Contents

Program Focus

EdD

In a traditional Doctor of Education program, you will study practical, immediately-applicable research. This kind of research and learning is perfect for advancing your educational career within the next couple of years.

PhD

A Doctor of Philosophy is more theoretical and research-focused. What makes a PhD degree differ from an EdD is the diverse educational background people come from. A PhD degree allows individuals to further study their interests, whatever they might be. Whether you are interested in philosophy, literature, engineering, or business, many schools have PhD options that cater to your passions.

To give you a more specific idea of what you would be studying in an EdD or a PhD, consider these standard courses:

Traditional EdD courses:

  • Educational leadership
  • Organizational change
  • Policy implementation
  • Fundraising

Traditional PhD courses (depending on track):

  • Critical Theory, Philosophy of History, Comparative Literature
  • Research Methods
  • Advanced Statistical Methods
  • Doctoral Dissertation Research

Program Structure

When looking at the more technical structures of doctoral programs, there are a few key differences between an EdD and a PhD that define the programs and your desired outcomes. We鈥檝e listed the key differences below to help distinguish the two programs

EdD Programs

  • An EdD takes an average of 3鈥5 years to complete
  • Quality, online EdD programs are common and accessible
  • Applied research focus
  • Dissertation or capstone final project

PhD Programs

  • A PhD takes an average of 4鈥7 years to complete
  • The nature of a PhD makes quality online program more difficult to find
  • Theoretical research focus
  • Dissertation final project

Career Outcomes

If you are determining what degree is best for you based on where you want to be in your career, consider this breakdown and examples to help shape your future into what you want.

EdD

Students in an EdD program are ones whose career trajectory is in the fields of educational leadership. The hands-on, applicable research you do in an EdD program can directly apply to the schools and institutions you lead.

PhD

A PhD is best suited for you if you aren鈥檛 necessarily looking to be an educational leader. Rather, you love exploring theory and pursuing abstract knowledge听that, as you become an expert, you could teach to others or spend more time researching.

If you are looking to advance your career with an EdD, you are probably interested in being a:

  • Superintendent
  • Principal
  • Policy advisor
  • Education consultant
  • Government official in education

Career options for those looking into a PhD are multitudinous. It might be the right program for you if you are interested in becoming a:

  • University professor
  • Researcher
  • Scholar
  • Policy advisor for education departments
  • Program director for nonprofits

A Quick Compare and Contrast

Differences between an EdD and a PhD

The Difference Between a PhD and an EdD: The Right Path for You

There can be confusing overlap between the two doctorates, especially depending on the type of PhD you pursue. 天涯海角社区 Receives MSCHE Approval for New Doctor of Education Program /cairn-university-receives-msche-approval-for-new-doctor-of-education-program/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 13:37:09 +0000 /?p=93331 On Friday, December 6, 2024, 天涯海角社区 announced that the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) officially approved the University鈥檚 initiative to implement a Doctor of Education (EdD) program. This approval marks a significant milestone in Cairn鈥檚 mission to expand its program offerings and serve future students with a distinctively Christ-centered approach.

天涯海角社区鈥檚 faculty and staff have worked diligently to assemble the necessary faculty, curriculum, and resources to launch this groundbreaking program. The EdD was conceived not merely for the advancement of the institution, but to meet the needs of instructors and educational leaders seeking affordable, flexible, and personal doctoral education grounded in Christ and His Word.

In today鈥檚 complex cultural climate鈥攚here issues such as objective truth, morality, and identity are often contentious topics in classrooms with some of our youngest鈥攅ducators can feel unsupported, isolated, and unprepared. Cairn鈥檚 EdD program will directly address these challenges by equipping its students to be leaders with the knowledge and skills to direct with confidence and purpose, guided by the grace and truth of Scripture.

Following the program鈥檚 approval, 天涯海角社区 President Dr. Todd J. Williams shared his thoughts:
鈥淭he launching of new doctoral degree programs at 天涯海角社区 has been a long time coming, and we grow very excited to get it underway. This approval by our accrediting body is the result of much hard work on the part of our faculty, staff, and administrators, and they are to be congratulated. We have always been encouraged by the interest people have shown in wanting to pursue their advanced graduate studies with us. I believe this approval will open new doors of opportunity for Cairn to serve those graduate students looking to earn a terminal degree at an institution that is unwavering in its core commitments to Christ and the Word.鈥

Cairn is currently accepting EdD applicants for the fall 2025.

Why a Christ-Centered Doctor of Education is the Unique Key to Your Career /why-a-christ-centered-doctor-of-education-is-the-unique-key-to-your-career/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 14:48:39 +0000 /?p=93149

As someone in education, you know there are requirements that mandate you to keep up with your credentials. This may motivate you to take a step in your educational pedagogy beyond garnering a few credits鈥攍ike earning a doctor of education. Receiving the best education means you need to find the institution that best fits your needs. Sometimes, yes, you just need the continuing education credits. But when aren’t just looking for cursory credits, you need a reliable, credible institution; one that offers you a program that aligns with the truth of Scripture and puts Christ in every aspect of your life. In addition to checking off other factors in finding the best EdD program, you also have to consider the importance pursuing a Christian EdD.

So whether your career is in public, private, or Christian education, consider these reasons why a Christian institution will take you further in your spiritual life and career more than any other.

Inside the Doctor of Education Classroom

Take Edification From Faith-Integrated Curriculum

Christian EdDs incorporate biblical truth into the entire curriculum, not just convenient parts. In turn, you will be provided with a teaching approach that aligns your academic training with your spiritual growth.

Build Community with your Faith-Based Network

A doctor of education program founded in Christian truths fosters an environment where you can openly express and strengthen your faith. This brings encouragement and challenge you to grow as a person and subsequently, as a teacher. Your peers and professors serve as a network of support, encouragement, and resources in and beyond the program. In smaller, Christian EdD programs, you won’t be another number. The relationships you build will be genuine, lasting you for many years to come.

Train for Ethical and Moral Decision-Making

EdDs at Christian institutions should emphasize ethics and morality based in Scripture. Why does a Christian EdD matter if you already have a solid belief foundation? You need a program that aligns with how you already view people, equipping you to handle complex educational challenges with both compassion and truth.

Obtain a Framework for Holistic Student Development

Christian institutions teach future educators to view students as whole individuals鈥攆ocusing not only on academic skills but also on emotional, social, and spiritual growth. A Christ-centered EdD will take you to the next level of this preparation in all areas of the program, whether that be through your dissertation, the curriculum, or peer conversation.

Christian EdD

Outside the Christian EdD Doors

Acquire Ways to Grow as a Christian Beyond Your EdD

A diploma isn’t the only asset that should be offered to you in an EdD. A quality Christian school offers on- and off-campus like Bible studies and online platforms aimed to help you grow spiritually as you advance academically. These are the same institutions that host annual seminars, conferences, or other events designed just for teachers to grow not only in knowledge in the classroom, but to be encouraged spiritually beyond the program.

Find Preparation to Serve Diverse Communities

An authentic Christian EdD will encourage you to grow in empathy, preparing leaders to serve and support students from all backgrounds with love and fairness, setting you apart as someone who goes above and beyond for those they are responsible for. Look for a program that has curriculum built to give you ways to live out your faith in any setting.

Focus on Servant Leadership

Doctoral programs that value Christian truths should emphasize the importance of serving others, training you to be a selfless leader who prioritizes the well-being not just of students, but also of the educators you lead. This focus is guaranteed to set you apart. Look for a program that supports you in finding opportunities to apply what you are learning.

Pursue a Calling, Not Just a Career

When you are finished with your doctor of education program, a Christian one will have left you viewing your work as more than a degree. Your program will support the fact that you are pursuing a calling. You’ll graduate prepared to make to make a meaningful impact because the program aligned with your faith.

Seek out programs that integrate real-world projects or field experiences鈥攖hese will allow you to apply what you learn in a practical context, enhancing your skills and resume.

4. Faculty Expertise

Qualified Leaders Teach You Quality Content

Education doctorate programs in particular should be made up of the best faculty. Look for programs where faculty members are experienced professionals and leaders in education, with strong backgrounds in research or administration. Their expertise can provide valuable insights and open doors to networking opportunities. Don鈥檛 hesitate to look up the faculty profiles, their publications, and their professional backgrounds to see if they align with your interests and can speak into the experience you’re looking to gain.

Strong student support services are essential for success in any graduate program. Look for institutions that offer services such as academic advising, career counseling, mentoring programs, and access to a dedicated support team. 6. Professional Network and Partnerships

Connect with the Right People

When searching for the best education doctoral programs, ones with strong partnerships with local school districts, higher education institutions, nonprofits, or government agencies could serve as a great advantage to you. Finding a program with a completion timeline that matches your schedule and needs can be a key consideration.

8. Affordability and Financial Aid

Budget for Your Education鈥揳nd Your Life

Some schools have partnerships with employers, offering tuition discounts or reimbursement programs for working professionals. Understanding the financial aspect, especially when considering point 7,听 can help you make an informed decision without sacrificing quality.

9. Capstone vs. Dissertation Options

Grow as a Scholar in a Way that Best Suits You

Some EdD programs allow students to choose between completing a traditional dissertation or an applied capstone project. You also want to search for a doctoral program that allows you to have the right amount of time needed to complete the project.听If you aren’t sure which option is right for you, research! about the difference between the two, and what might suit your needs best:

10. Location

Consider Proximity and On-Campus Requirements

If you are looking for a program with in-person elements, consider the school鈥檚 location and on-campus requirements. Some hybrid programs may require periodic campus visits for seminars, workshops, or residencies. Make sure the location is convenient for you, or check if travel expenses fit within your budget.
